The new Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, assured Italy's Foreign Minister that Americans will not abandon Ukraine.
Antonio Tajani discussed their conversation in an interview with Politico. According to him, Rubio insisted that the U.S. would not turn its back on Ukraine. The minister also attempted to downplay the risk that the new U.S. president might resort to a military takeover of Greenland.
Tajani emphasized that Europe needs to purchase more from the U.S., as well as increase defense budgets and strengthen its economy to avoid a trade war with Donald Trump:
"We must accelerate our path to becoming stronger and complete the creation of a banking union, a single energy market, fiscal harmonization, and European defense. Europe should not only be strong in setting rules; it needs to be politically and economically robust."
Trump Administration's Stance on the War
Recall that the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, stated that she and Rubio agreed on the need to continue applying pressure on Russia.
In a recent interview, the Secretary of State mentioned that for the war to end, both sides must make concessions. He called the notion that Ukraine could push the occupying forces back to the borders of 1991 a lie.
