A boy named Tikhon from Dnipropetrovsk region received a heart from a boy from Odesa, whose parents made the decision to donate organs after their child's death. This was reported by "Vidomo" referencing the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine.
Tikhon from Dnipropetrovsk returned home after a successful heart transplant performed by cardiothoracic surgeon Boris Todurov and the team from the Heart Institute of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine on St. Nicholas Day.
For seven years, Tikhon battled cardiomyopathy—a condition that limited his childhood.
"For a month, the boy was cared for first in the intensive care unit and then in the congenital heart defects department. The doctors, nurses, and caregivers became a second home for the parents and the child during this time, doing everything possible and impossible to give Tikhon this chance at life!" – the message states.
The donor was a boy from the Odesa region. After suffering a brain hemorrhage, his parents decided to donate his organs, giving Tikhon a chance at a new life. Now his heart continues to beat, bringing joy to Tikhon's childhood.
"Currently, dozens of children in Ukraine are waiting for transplants. Every day, their parents hope to hear the words 'there is a donor.' Tikhon's story gives hope to other families and highlights the importance of organ donation," – said representatives from the Heart Institute.
