The head of the Kryvyi Rih District Department of the State Emergency Service of Ukraine in the Dnipropetrovsk region, Colonel of Civil Protection Oleg Sichkaruk, shared insights about the work of rescuers during "arrivals" in an interview with "Vidomo."
"We are currently in a wartime situation, and various emergencies can arise due to the military aggression of the Russian Federation and the ongoing war. It is impossible to prepare 100% because we do not know where a missile is headed or where a 'Shahed' will fall. It is uncertain whether it will hit a residential or non-residential building. We cannot predict if communications will be damaged. Therefore, if the incident occurs in a region or city, all necessary services are engaged. The civil protection rescue service is involved, as well as the civil protection services of local authorities equipped with the necessary engineering equipment. This includes cranes, dump trucks, and vehicles delivering water. We also mobilize as much equipment as needed for debris removal or fire extinguishing in case of an outbreak," he stated.
Sichkaruk also noted that the State Emergency Service collaborates with the State Emergency Rescue Unit during debris removal operations. They are also located in the city of Kryvyi Rih.
"They have experience in rescuing people, as they service the mining industry. They conduct emergency rescue operations underground. They know how to work in voids and how to properly unblock people. They apply their expertise in situations we manage in the aftermath of shelling. A large team is at work. It cannot be said that only the State Emergency Service is involved. Everyone works towards a common goal – to extract people as quickly as possible to ensure their survival. There have been instances that can send chills down your spine. We once found a girl who had been trapped under the rubble for quite some time. We discovered her on a lower floor than where she lived. She was taken to a medical facility. She is doing well, but it was truly a miracle that after some time we excavated her, and she survived right at the epicenter of the explosion. It is indeed a miracle," Sichkaruk shared.
