The Ukrainian language is rich in colorful words. For example, the word "бутерброд" (sandwich) has not only the synonym "канапка" (canape) — there are over 20 words that can replace this popular snack name, which originated from the German language.

During the Cossack era, "потапці" referred to a type of sandwich, a snack to accompany horilka (vodka). Bacon was fried in a pan, sliced thinly, and on this fat, pieces of black rye bread were toasted on both sides.
