Not a waste of time: Researchers have identified the positive effects of playing certain video games.

Some individuals still believe that spending time on video games is a pointless and unhealthy use of time. In an effort to change their minds, researchers have discovered that one category of these games has a significant positive effect on our mental well-being.

A recent study conducted by scientists has revealed clear benefits of open-world video games for the mental health of their players. The research, carried out by Imperial College London and the University of Graz, involved over 600 graduate students who reflected on their experiences with expansive games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. It turned out that despite the stereotype of wasting time without benefit, video games offer a range of advantages for our well-being, as reported by ScienceAlert.

The findings from the study, published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research and led by Ayline Anto from Imperial College London, indicated that open-world games can promote relaxation, cognitive escapism, and an overall improvement in players' well-being. Participants reported feelings of calmness, stress relief, and even personal growth, with one individual describing the game as a unique "form of meditation."

Open-world games are characterized by vast, minimally restricted environments that allow players to explore diverse landscapes, uncover secrets, and engage in self-directed gameplay. Unlike more structured forms of digital leisure, such as social networks, which researchers have already linked to mental health issues, these games facilitate emotional release and mental distraction, according to the authors. The autonomy and immersion offered by such entertainment appear to be key factors in their positive impact on mental health.

The study included 609 surveys and 32 interviews. Participants noted feelings of satisfaction, relaxation, and the opportunity to "disconnect" from everyday worries. These advantages, according to the researchers, make open-world games a unique tool for emotional and psychological support. Developers may also find value in these studies and could design future games with mental health benefits in mind, the scientists hope.

Technological advancements have significantly enhanced the complexity of open-world games, providing players with almost a second life in a richly detailed virtual environment. Such games allow players to undertake missions at their own pace, encouraging experimentation and discovery without strict deadlines and limitations, further contributing to a stress-free gaming experience.

This research aligns with broader studies conducted earlier that link moderate video game play with reduced stress and increased overall life satisfaction. While caution is advised regarding excessive gaming, the potential of such experiences as a complement to therapeutic practices could pave the way for unconventional and effective interventions in the mental health of those in need.
