One of the suspected motives for the new Ukrainian offensive in the Kursk region could be the desire to improve their position ahead of potential future ceasefire negotiations, journalists believe.

"Ukraine has launched a counter-offensive in southern Russia near Kursk, warning that Russia is 'getting what it deserves,'" states a report from CNN.

The Russian Ministry of Defense, for its part, claimed that Ukrainian troops have begun movements to halt the Russian advance in the Kursk region. Meanwhile, Russian "military bloggers" report that the Armed Forces of Ukraine are advancing north towards Berdin, utilizing their reserves in this offensive.

"For the breakthrough, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have targeted the area with powerful electronic warfare systems, complicating the operations of our UAVs [drones]. Fighting is ongoing with the use of small arms, and our artillery and tanks are actively engaging the enemy," writes one Russian war correspondent.

Another war correspondent adds that allegedly in this offensive, Ukraine is using recovery vehicles for demining, tanks, and other armored vehicles, which are aided by the cold weather. They are being countered, in particular, by Russian bombers.

Kremlin dictator Vladimir Putin, during a year-end press conference in December, refused to disclose when Russia would reclaim part of the Kursk region currently held by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

What else is known about the Ukrainian offensive near Kursk

Earlier, UNIAN reported that the Ukrainian Armed Forces managed to find a good moment to initiate an offensive in the Kursk region. "In the last few days, the Russians were preparing a certain rotation in this direction," noted an expert.

Additionally, there have been several details revealed about this offensive. In particular, that Ukraine is employing electronic warfare systems that hinder the normal operations of Russian UAVs. "During the offensive, all radio frequencies and even the internet were jammed," notes one channel.
