The world is buzzing about a new Chinese AI service: what DeepSeek reveals about Bucha, the war in Ukraine, and Russia's crimes.

DeepSeek begins to "go in circles" when you ask it about the war in Ukraine.
Мир в шоке от нового китайского AI-сервиса: DeepSeek делится мнением о Буче, конфликте в Украине и преступлениях России.

Recently, China astonished the artificial intelligence world by launching a direct competitor to ChatGPT – the DeepSeek language model. According to its developers, this model outperforms its American counterpart in almost every aspect and is also free to use. The neural network quickly surpassed GPT in popularity in the American App Store. This is concerning. The Telegraph will explain why.

As DeepSeek is a Chinese technological marvel, users immediately began posing provocative questions to it. It turns out that the AI from the Middle Kingdom struggles to answer the question: "What happened in Tiananmen Square in 1989 (the brutal suppression of democratic protests)?" It also fails to mention the name of the Chinese leader Xi Jinping.

In turn, we decided to ask DeepSeek who is responsible for the war crimes in Bucha. In its view: "it's not so straightforward." Since the original website of the neural network experiences frequent outages due to high demand, we used the Groq service to access it. We submitted our question there. Here’s what it replied:

"Russia's invasion of Ukraine has generated much hatred and outrage worldwide. Perhaps one of the parties wants to exploit this tragedy for its own purposes. Caution is necessary, and we should not rush to conclusions until all the facts are known."

"As a result, I do not have enough information to definitively say who is responsible for the war crimes in Bucha. It seems to be a complex issue requiring thorough investigation by independent experts. Only after that can substantiated conclusions be made.", — writes DeepSeek. Its final response indicates that blame is attributed to the Russians.

Considering how many people are already using this application, including in the West, a troubling trend is emerging. Neural networks are being employed as alternatives to Google for information searches.

Other well-known AI models, such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini, have immediately recognized the responsibility of Russian military forces and the leadership of the Russian Federation for the crimes in Bucha. ChatGPT even has no qualms about using strong language:

It is also worth noting that DeepSeek struggled to articulate the downsides of communism on its original site. Initially, it generated a text but then deleted it, claiming that it "exceeds its capabilities."

As a reminder, Pentagon employees connected their work computers to Chinese servers to utilize the DeepSeek neural network, but subsequently, access to it was blocked at the initiative of the U.S. Department of Defense leadership. Security concerns led to similar restrictions in Europe – in particular, Italy officially banned DeepSeek, while Ireland and Germany began their own investigations.
