Laser technologies are already targeting specific objects of Russian occupiers at certain altitudes. This was stated by Vadim Sukharevsky, the commander of the Ukrainian Armed Forces' Unmanned Systems, in an interview with "Donbass Realities".
In response to a question about whether work is currently being done on the use of lasers, he noted that the effort to combat the enemy's unmanned aerial systems and find solutions against the "Shaheds" has led to "teams that are actively engaged in this."
"And yes... Laser technologies are now already impacting certain objects at specific altitudes," – Sukharevsky declared.
Laser Weapons in Ukraine
In January 2024, the commander of the Armed Forces' Unmanned Systems stated that Ukraine already possesses laser weaponry called "Trident".
"We can confirm that today Ukraine is, if I'm not mistaken, the fifth country that can say it has a laser," – he said at that time.
According to the commander, the Unmanned Systems are close to enhancing and scaling up Ukraine's "laser capabilities."
The Ukrainian military publication Defense Express reported that little is officially known about this weapon. The announced effective range and target class for the new weapon indicate that it is a highly advanced development.
In their article, the authors noted that the effective range of a laser is directly related to its power. For instance, to hit a target at a distance of 2 kilometers, a power of at least 50 kW is required.
