How to Prepare Compote with Prunes

On Christmas, Holy Evening, and Epiphany, kutya is prepared. We shared its classic recipe. A constant companion of this dish is uzvar. This fragrant beverage is made from dried fruits and sweetened with honey.

Culinary blogger Mil Alexx, in his video, explained how to cook it for a luxurious aroma. He discussed the perfect ratio – for each liter of water, use 1 handful of dried apples and 1/4 handful each of pears and smoked prunes. From the given amount of ingredients, you can make over four liters of rich uzvar.

Ingredients:

  • 4 handfuls of dried apples
  • 1 handful of dried pears
  • 1 handful of smoked prunes
  • a few raisins, if desired
  • 4 liters of water
  • 1-2 tablespoons of honey (to taste)

Cooking Method:

  1. If desired, you can add raisins, dried apricots, or other dried fruits that you like to the uzvar. Rinse all dried fruits thoroughly with water.
  2. Drain the water along with any dirt. Refill with water, place on the heat, and bring to a boil.
  3. After boiling, simmer for a few more minutes. Allow it to cool slightly and add honey to taste — 1 tablespoon of honey if you prefer the compote not to be sweet, or 2 tablespoons if you want it sweet.
  4. Stir the honey into the uzvar. Let the drink steep for at least 12 hours.
