The leading diplomat of the European Union, Kaia Kallas stated that the EU is prepared to take the initiative in supporting Ukraine if the United States no longer wishes to do so.
"I truly believe that all other EU members, and hopefully the United States as well, are ready to continue supporting Ukraine," Kallas said while en route to a meeting of Ukraine's allies in Ramstein, writes Politico.
"The European Union is also ready to take on this leadership if the United States does not want to," she added:
"We should not speculate about future U.S. support. It is not in America's interest for Russia to be the strongest in the world."
The head of European diplomacy clarified that "there is indeed a willingness among EU countries" to continue support in this format.
It is noted that Kallas's comments contrast with those of her predecessor, Josep Borrell, who stated last year that "Europe cannot fill the gap" when it comes to supporting Ukraine.
The War in Ukraine - Trump's Position
Ukraine and its allies are awaiting Donald Trump's inauguration as President of the United States on January 20 to determine whether Washington will continue to support Kyiv.
While Trump's comments earlier this week, in which he said he "understands" Russia's concerns regarding NATO, caused confusion among Ukraine's supporters, the statements from his future special envoy to Ukraine were more encouraging.
Keith Kellogg stated that Trump "is not trying to give anything to Putin or the Russians" and "is trying to save Ukraine and protect its sovereignty." The elected president is working to find a solution to the nearly three-year conflict within the first 100 days after taking office, Kellogg added.
