The world's fastest supercomputer has launched in California, designed for a specific purpose (video).

Instead of taking a week to process data, the computer completes the task in just an hour or a day.
В Калифорнии запустили самый быстрый суперкомпьютер в мире, который будет использоваться для уникальных задач (видео).

The Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) in California has officially launched El Capitan – the fastest supercomputer in the world. This is the first exascale computing system developed for the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA).

At LLNL, it was noted that the exascale computer is capable of performing over 2 quintillion calculations per second (2.79 exaFLOPs at peak). El Capitan has become the third computer to achieve exascale computing speed. Its processing power is equivalent to that of one million top-tier smartphones operating simultaneously.

The supercomputer will tackle a wide range of classified tasks. Among them are complex modeling and simulation of nuclear explosions in ultra-realistic 3D with high resolution. Previously, these tasks would take days or weeks on supercomputers, but now they can be completed in a single workday or even a few hours. In addition to national security, El Capitan and its accompanying system Tuolumne will drive innovative research in materials science, high-energy density physics, space science, advanced manufacturing, drug discovery, and climate modeling.

El Capitan cost $600 million. It has been in development since May 2023 and was connected to the network in November 2024. It officially began operations in January. El Capitan, developed by Hewlett Packard Enterprise, is equipped with advanced AMD MI300A Instinct Accelerated Processing Units (APUs).
