In the Netherlands, a wooden shoe dating back 500 years has been discovered. It was found during construction work in a cesspool. This type of footwear was once worn by farmers. Reuters writes about it.
The half-century-old shoe was located in the city of Alkmaar.
"It was found in a cesspool in the city. This is a very special fact because when you think of wooden shoes, you always recall the farmers who used them while working," said archaeologist Silke Lange.
The wooden shoe was unearthed during the construction of an underground waste container in Alkmaar, approximately 30 km northwest of Amsterdam.
According to archaeologists, the cesspool was used as a toilet and for waste disposal from around 1450 to 1558.
The shoe, estimated to be a European size 36, was made in the late 15th or early 16th century.
This is the first birch wood shoe found in the Netherlands and one of 44 wooden shoes discovered during excavations in the Netherlands and Belgium.
As a reminder, in Norway, archaeologists uncovered female burials with unique artifacts. Scientists found numerous items, including luxurious jewelry and imported adornments.
Previously, there was a report about a creepy find in the Netherlands. Archaeologists discovered a floor made of bones that dates back to the 15th century CE.
