On Friday, January 17, newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese Chairman Xi Jinping held a phone conversation, as reported by Xinhua.
The publication did not disclose the details of the leaders' discussion.
Updated. 16:41. Soon after, Trump posted on his page on Truth Social that he indeed spoke with Xi Jinping.
"It was a very good conversation for both China and the U.S. I expect that we will work together to solve many problems immediately. We discussed trade balance issues, fentanyl, TikTok, and many other topics. President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world a more peaceful and secure place!" he noted.
It is worth mentioning that shortly after the U.S. presidential elections, Xi Jinping told the current White House occupant Joe Biden that his country would cooperate with the new Trump administration. According to him, this would help resolve disagreements in U.S.-China relations.
In December, it became known that Trump invited Xi Jinping to his inauguration, which is set to take place on January 20 in Washington.
However, the Chinese leader declined the invitation of the newly elected U.S. president. He decided to send Vice President Han Zheng in his place.
"China desires stable, healthy, and sustainable relations with the U.S. and is ready to work with the new American government to find the right path for both countries to achieve mutual understanding," stated an unnamed representative of the Chinese Foreign Ministry.

Earlier, Business Insider reported that China has increasingly been openly and covertly demonstrating its strength right before the inauguration of newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump. Analysts believe that the PRC's increased military activity is not without reason.
Moreover, in early 2025, China imposed sanctions on 28 American companies. The restrictions were introduced allegedly due to the supply and sale of weapons to Taiwan.
